What is a double crochet?

A little stitch with big impact, the double crochet (dc), also known in the US as the single crochet, is the simplest and probably the most satisfying of the crochet stitches, creating tight, dense material that can be used to craft anything from scarves, jumpers and beyond!

How to start

Before you start practicing your double crochet skills, there a few steps you need to complete before you begin. First up, tie a slip knot and chain the number of stitches you would like in your row, which is called the foundation chain. Our beginners guide to crochet is here to help get you started!

How to double crochet step-by-step

step 1

Get started. Insert your crochet hook into the next stitch.

step 2

Pull it through. Yarn over, pull yarn through stitch. You should now have two loops on your crochet hook.

step 3

Yarn over again, pull loop through both loops. You’ve just mastered the double crochet!

step 4

Repeat. Continue double crocheting to the end of your row, or repeat as many as you need for your pattern.

How to double crochet in row 2

When you reach the end of your first row don't forget to chain an extra chain before you begin the row 2. This will serve as the first stitch at the beginning of your next row. Turn your work and double crochet into the second stitch from your hook. Continue steps to the end of row two and repeat!

Fastening off

Fastening off is the easy way of securing your yarn when you have finished crocheting. All you need to do is snip the loose working yarn, leaving a tail. Thread your tail back through the live loop and pull tight to secure. Sew in the loose end - and that's it!
