Raccoons are extremely intelligent & inquisitive creatures with a great memory. While gaining an unfavorable reputation in some environments, they’re one of the best urban-adapted animals in the world & serve an important niche in the ecosystem as a pest-control and cleanup crew. This hat was designed as a tribute to them.
The basic hat is a circular knit worsted weight watch cap with an additional ringed tail. (I used a Magic Loop needle and RedHeart Super Saver® yarn for the samples.) Separate instructions for 5 hat sizes are included, from Child 3-10 to XL-Adult.
The embroidered face is done with duplicate stitch, & the pattern assumes a knowledge of this technique. Fair Isle (knitting with 2 or more colors across a round) & intarsia (knitting with separate blocks of color) will not work because the embroidery includes half stitches. Detailed charts for each face color are provided. 8mm glass beads or buttons make the eyes stand out. It’s a unique & fun hat for folks of all ages.
