Use whatever cotton or cotton blend you have. The moss stitch in this pattern gives the mug rug a nice texture, and a moves along very quickly.
Use whatever hook size is recommended with your yarn, usually a 5mm or 5.5mm hook will do. It is also easy to play with the size - just add or remove the number of rows or stitches in each row to make it larger or smaller.
