This floral inspired crochet coaster tutorial is jam packed full of tips, tricks and pics. Abby from Calm Homemade takes you through the steps to crochet in the round using the puff and shell stitch. This tutorial uses US crochet terminology.

How to crochet a simple coaster

step 1

Start by making a magic ring. Place 1 3-puff sts into the middle of the ring, repeat 5 more times, sl st to join (6 puff clusters total).

How to Puff st:
Insert your hook into the st, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over place your hook back into the same st and yarn over pull up another loop. repeat 1 more time, you should have 6 loops on your hook, yarn over and pull through all loops on your hook and close by with a ch 1.

Place 1 3-puff st into the 1st st from the start of the previous row, repeat into every st until you reach the end of the round, join with a sl st (12 puff clusters total).

Pro Tip

Count your puff clusters as you go to make sure you don't miss a st!

Place 1 3-puff st into the 1st st from the previous row, repeat into every st 'til you reach the end of the round, join with a sl st (24 puff clusters total).

Pro Tip

If you want to change colour you can do so by pulling the new coloured yarn through the loop on your hook and tie the 2 colours together. You can go around the ends as you crochet so you don't have to weave them in at the end.

Ch 1, sc into every st and ch, sl st at the end of the round to join. (48 total).

Place 3, 3-puff clusters into the 1st st (all into the same st), skip 1 st, place 1 sc, skip 1 st, repeat this sequence until you reach the end of the round, join with a sl st into the 1st puff st.

Ch 3, (into the st before the puff) place 4 dc, place 1 sc into the peak of the middle puff st. Place 5 dc into the sc from the previous row, repeat until you reach the last puff cluster from the previous row. To join, insert your hook into the second from last puff (middle puff cluster like normal), then through the top of the ch 3, yarn over and pull through both sts with a sl st to join.

Place 3, 3-puff clusters into the 1st st (all into the same st), skip 2 st, place 1 sc, skip 2 repeat this sequence 'til you reach the last puff cluster from the previous row. To join, insert your hook into the second from last puff (middle puff cluster like normal), then through the top of the ch 3, yarn over and pull through both sts with a sl st to join. Ch 1 and fasten off. Weave in the remaining ends.
