When it comes to designing, I love to take something traditional (a particular shape, technique etc) as my jumping-off point. Then comes the fun part - I get playful with it, testing what happens if I switch up colours, or add in textures, or extend motifs, or… you get the idea. In my opinion, the Truham socks are a perfect example of how the process can play out. I started out with just a traditional flea stitch. From there, I doubled the size of each “flea,” switched in a variegated yarn and added in another colourwork motif (in a bonus colour, of course!) and I’m really rather pleased with the outcome.
The pattern is written for working toe up. You will be working stranded colourwork for much of the sock but there’s no need to panic if you’re new to colourwork - there are plenty of “rest rows” and the floats are all nice and short so the yarn management isn’t too tricky. The pattern also includes full detailed instructions on how to work a German short row heel.
