This a great pattern for a novice to learn to knit cables. There is only one "proper" cable with the rest being eyelet-rib mock cables and therefore much easier than it looks. A good intermediate knitter could make this quick gift in an evening.

Any 4ply yarn with good stitch definition will work. A solid or semi-solid shade will show your beautifully created textures off best. It will typically take around half a ball (check yardage) so this is a great stash-buster.
