This pattern will allow you to use up scraps of 4ply sock yarn. A solid dark yarn as main and a bright variegated contrast will give a stained glass effect, or for tiny scraps make each window pane a different colour. A full range of hat sizes is given from baby to adult.
You will need approximately 100m (110 yards) of a variegated yarn and 100m (110 yards) of a solid main yarn for a large adult hat, less for smaller sizes.
The hat is knitted flat and is seamed. The colourwork is stranded.
