Every year my husband and I look forward the flowering of the blossom trees in spring. We love celebrating by making and eating various wagashi treats like these sakura mochi. They have a more coarse texture than other mochi so this is reflected in the pattern.
It's suitable for beginners, but some of the construction techniques may be new to you. I’ve therefore included photo guides throughout to help you follow along, as well as links to videos for any potentially unfamiliar stitches.
It’s a very quick make and is both simple and satisfying. What I love best is that you can interact with the finished result!
You’ll make the mochi filling 1st and then the sakura leaf to wrap around it and a little sakura flower on top.
The leaf has a small loop so it doesn’t need to be permanently attached. Instead, you can just wrap the leaf around the mochi and tuck the thin end of the leaf through the loop at the base – so it’s a lot of fun for kids or adults to play with and ‘make’ themsel
