The Study Buddy Mitts is a great skill-builder pattern and includes links to photo tutorials for each technique used (also available as downloadable hand-outs). They are knit flat (so you can either use a straight needle or circulars back-and-forth) and then sides are joined together at the end using the three needle bind-off technique.
