Aran & Worsted Weight Yarn

Aran and worsted weight yarns give you speedy makes with beautiful stitch definition. Worsted knits on around 4.5mm needles and aran wool on 5mm needles, so both work up faster than finer weights while keeping plenty of drape. Choose from wool, cotton and easy-care blends, then pick a project from our aran knitting patterns or baby aran knitting patterns.

Aran or worsted - what's the difference?

They're close cousins rather than the same thing. Worsted weight yarn is slightly finer and usually knits at around 20 stitches to 10cm; aran (sometimes called heavy worsted or 10 ply) is a touch heavier at around 18 stitches. In practice many patterns work with either, provided you swatch.

What to make with it

  • Cabled jumpers and cardigans - aran weight shows cables at their best.
  • Hats, mittens and scarves that knit up in an evening or two.
  • Blankets and homeware, where the extra weight gives a satisfying, substantial fabric.

Questions makers ask

Can I use worsted weight yarn for a UK aran pattern? Usually yes, but knit a tension square first and go up a needle size if your swatch comes out small.

Which needle size suits aran yarn? 5mm is the common starting point; check the ball band.
