Earthshine Shawlette

“The old Moon in the new Moon’s arms” or “the ghostly image of the moon between the horns of the crescent moon”. These poetic phrases describe the phenomena of Earthshine. During a crescent moon, it is the sun that fills the moon with brilliant light. But, it is the pale light reflected off the Earth that gives the rest of the moon a ghostly glow, called Earthshine. The Earthshine Shawlette explores the themes of reflection and release, as the distinctive elongated caliper cables and columns of dropped stitches are worked. The top portion of the crescent features delicate eyelet lace columns, suggestive of Earth’s faint shine on the moon’s surface.
