What is Being Made

The Bow Scarflette is a knitted scarf accessory designed by independent designer Buzybee. This project creates a decorative scarflette—a shorter, more compact scarf style—featuring a distinctive bow construction. The finished piece combines garter stitch sections with ribbed panels that are cleverly separated by a slot mechanism, allowing the scarf to be threaded through itself to create a bow effect.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several fundamental and intermediate techniques to achieve its unique bow design. The pattern begins with incremental increases using the kfb (knit front and back) method to expand the initial three stitches up to twenty-four stitches, building the foundation of the scarflette. Throughout the project, slip stitch edge finishing is used consistently, where the last stitch of each garter stitch row is slipped purlwise to create a neat, finished edge.

A key construction technique is the slot creation method, where stitches are strategically divided onto a stitch holder while others remain on the working needle. This creates two separate panels that are worked independently in different stitch patterns before being rejoined. This slot mechanism is essential to the bow functionality of the finished scarflette, as it allows one ribbed section to be threaded through the other to form the decorative bow.

Stitches Used

The Bow Scarflette utilizes a limited but effective stitch vocabulary appropriate for an intermediate project:

• Garter stitch (g st) – created by knitting every row, forming the textured, reversible base sections of the scarflette
• Knit front and back (kfb) – an increase technique used in the cast-on rows to expand the stitch count from three to twenty-four stitches

Materials and Tools

This project requires minimal materials, making it an efficient use of yarn. The pattern calls for 50 grams of DK weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides good stitch definition and drape suitable for a scarflette. 4mm needles are used throughout the project, with a tension of 22 stitches and 40 rows measuring 10 centimeters in garter stitch on these needles. Additionally, a stitch holder is essential for temporarily holding the stitches that form the slot, and a spare needle is needed to hold one set of ribbed stitches while the other is being worked.
