There’s nothing sweeter than crocheting cute designs for babies, and these little booties most certainly have the “aww” factor! Kate Eastwood has come up with this brilliant pattern for super soft, cool cotton summer shoes that babies will find soft as butter and grown-ups will find cute as a button!
The best part of this fab project is that each pair of booties is made from less than one ball of yarn; making the perfect choice for whipping up last-minute baby shower and new arrival gifts! It also means that you can justify making a pair in every colour!
This pattern is in UK crochet terms.
- 1x ball of cotton DK yarn in a shade of your choice
- 3mm (for newborn size)
- 3.55mm hook (for 0-3 months size)
- A small amount of cotton DK yarn in a complementary shade for the edging and the flowers (optional)
- 2mm hook (for the flowers, optional)
To make the sole of the shoe
Round 1: Make a chain of 16.

Continue on working round with 6 HTR, 8 DC, 2 HTR in to each of the next 2 stitches, follwed by 1 HTR, 2 HTR in the next stitch, and 1 HTR. Sl St to join. 55 sts. This completes the sole. Do not finish off but chain 1.

Rounds 2 and 3: Working through both loops as usual, DC 55. Sl St to join at the end of the round. You will now see that the shape of the shoe is beginning to appear. You are now going to continue working rounds but you will start to decrease to form the detail of the shoe.
Round 4: Chain 1. DC 22 then decrease by working the next 2 stitches together , DC 2. Decrease by working the next 2 stitches together , DC 2. Decrease by working the next 2 stitches together and then DC 23. Sl St to join at the end of the round. 52 sts.
Round 5: Chain 1. DC 19 then *decrease by working the next 2 stitches together , DC 1.* Repeat from * to * 4 more times. Decrease once more and then DC 16. Sl St to join at the end of the round. 46 sts.
Round 6: Chain 1 and DC 18. Decrease 2 stitches together 6 times, DC 15. Sl St to join at the end of the round. 39 sts.
Round 7: (Work this round in contrast colour if you want to add a different colour edging) Chain 1 and Sl St all the way around. Sl St to join. Finish off and sew in the ends.
Now with the upper of the shoe facing you, rejoin your yarn (in contrasting yarn if preferred) and Sl St all the way around the outer edge of the sole of the shoe, into the unworked part of the stitch from Round 1 of the shoe.
To make the ankle strap
Chain 41. Starting in the second chain from the hook, DC to the end. Finish off.
With RS facing rejoin your yarn at the beginning of the row and Sl St along to the end. Finish off and sew in the ends.
Position the ankle strap and stitch in to place at the centre back of the shoe. Stitch a popper firmly into place so that the ankle strap can be fastened.
To finish off the shoe I added a small ribbon bow or a flower. You could also add a small pom-pom.
To make the flower
Using small amounts of 4 ply and a 2mm hook, make a magic ring.
Work 7 DC into the ring.
Join in a contrast colour with a Sl St and *chain 5.
Starting in the second chain from the hook work back down the chain as follows: Sl St, DC 3, Sl St back in to the same stitch.
Stitch your finished flower firmly into place at the front of the shoe.
