It is widely known among my knitting friends that I knit for charity and that I am also adopting yarn for this cause. So when said friends are destashing yarn, some of it is forwarded to me. Although I am a fan of gauge swatching, I dislike doing so for every different yarn. And here kicked my engineering brain in: why not develop a pattern that needs no gauge and yet always results in a fitting hat?
This no-gauge hat is worked in garter stitch on the ias. Starting with just a few stitches, increases form the first half of the hat, front and back simultaneously. Then the other half is shaped with deceases. After seaming one side together, you can wear the hat as it is with little "ears", or you can tuck in the corners for a slouchy style.
