Product Description

Heart Sweater is a seamless pullover with a heart pattern panel at the front and back, and 1x1 rib at the sides. The body is worked bottom up in the round, to the underarms, then sleeve stitches are provisionally cast on and the yoke is worked in the round with raglan decreases and short rows shaping the front of the neck. The sleeves are worked from the yoke down, so their length can be easily adjusted.

The pattern is available in a wide range of sizes: from 2 years to adult 2X.

A cardigan version is also available (Heart Cardigan).

What is Being Made

The Heart Sweater is a seamless pullover knitting pattern featuring a distinctive heart pattern panel displayed on both the front and back of the garment. The design incorporates 1x1 ribbing at the sides for a tailored fit. This versatile pattern is available in a comprehensive range of sizes, spanning from 2 years through adult 2X, making it suitable for children and adults alike. A cardigan version of this design is also available as an alternative construction method.

Construction Technique

The Heart Sweater is constructed using a seamless, top-down approach with several advanced shaping techniques. The body is worked bottom up in the round, building from the hem to the underarms in a continuous circular knit. At the underarms, sleeve stitches are provisionally cast on, and the yoke is then worked in the round using raglan decreases to create the characteristic raglan sleeve cap shaping. Short rows are strategically employed to shape the front of the neck, providing a comfortable and flattering neckline. The sleeves are worked downward from the yoke, allowing knitters to easily adjust sleeve length to their preference without affecting the overall garment proportions.

Stitches and Techniques Used

This intermediate-level pattern requires several essential knitting skills and stitch techniques:

  • Provisional cast-on – used to temporarily cast on stitches that will be picked up later
  • Tubular or long tail cast-ons – foundational cast-on methods for creating finished edges
  • Stockinette stitch – the primary stitch used for the body and sleeves, creating a smooth, classic fabric
  • 1x1 ribbing – knit and purl alternating stitches used at the side panels for elasticity and definition
  • Increases and decreases – shaping techniques essential for raglan construction and yoke shaping
  • Working in the round – circular knitting method that creates a seamless garment
  • Short rows – advanced shaping technique for contouring the neckline

Materials

The Heart Sweater is designed to be worked in worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides good stitch definition for the heart pattern detail. The pattern accommodates a wide yardage range to accommodate the multiple size options available, starting from 500 yards for the smallest size and increasing up to 1420 yards for the largest adult sizes. Knitters will need appropriate needles for worsted weight yarn and the ability to work with circular needles for the seamless in-the-round construction method.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to tackle more complex shaping methods such as raglan decreases, short rows, and seamless yoke construction.
