Aran and worsted: close cousins, not twins

These two names get used interchangeably and they are not quite the same thing. Worsted weight is the North American standard, typically knitting around 20 stitches over 10cm on 4.5mm needles. Aran is the British term for a slightly heavier yarn, closer to 18 stitches over 10cm on 5mm, and it is sometimes labelled heavy worsted or 10 ply. The gap is small but real: substituting aran into a worsted pattern without swatching will give you a garment roughly a size larger, and a fabric that feels stiffer than the designer intended. Read the ball band tension, not the name on the label.

Why this weight is so popular

Aran and worsted are the practical middle. They knit up meaningfully faster than DK - an adult jumper in aran is perhaps a third quicker than the same design in DK - while still producing a fabric with drape, unlike chunky, which can go boardy in a fitted garment. They show cables and textured stitches better than any other weight, which is why the classic Aran sweater exists at all: the twists have enough depth to cast a shadow. And they are the default weight for blankets, because you get real coverage without the bulk of super chunky.

Fibres and what each does

• Pure wool: springy, warm, blocks superbly, holds cable definition. The traditional choice for Aran sweaters and outerwear.
• Merino and merino blends: softer next to the skin, ideal for jumpers worn without a layer underneath.
• Cotton and cotton blends: cool, crisp, hard-wearing, no memory - excellent for bags, dishcloths, market totes and summer tops, less good for fitted ribbing.
• Acrylic and wool-acrylic blends: washable, affordable across a whole blanket, and the sensible option for children's garments and everyday throws.
• Alpaca blends: heavy drape and serious warmth; choose a shorter body length as alpaca grows with wear.

Quantities to plan for

Always work from metreage rather than ball count, because a 100g ball of aran may hold anywhere from around 150m to 200m depending on fibre and spin. As rough planning figures, an adult jumper in aran commonly needs somewhere in the region of 1,000 to 1,500 metres depending on size and length, a hat one ball, and a lap blanket several hundred grams more than most people expect. Buy the full quantity in a single dye lot at the outset and keep one ball band for the wash symbols.

Tension and needles

Knit at least a 15cm square in the stated stitch pattern, wash it, dry it, then measure the middle. Cabled fabrics pull in significantly, so if the pattern gives tension over cable pattern rather than stocking stitch, swatch the cable - measuring stocking stitch and hoping is how a cabled jumper ends up 10cm too narrow. Needle-wise, 4.5mm and 5mm are the workhorses; wooden needles help with slippery cotton and mercerised yarns, sharp metal tips make cable crossing easier.

Cabled jumpers and cardigans, textured hats, blanket squares, chunky-look scarves that are still wearable indoors, cushion covers, market bags in cotton, dishcloths, and almost all crochet homeware. In crochet, aran weight on a 5mm or 5.5mm hook produces baskets and bags with enough body to stand up, and blankets that grow fast without weighing a stone.

Finishing and care

Block cabled pieces gently - stretching a cable panel flat kills the very definition you knitted it for. Pat to measurements rather than pinning hard, and let the twists stand proud. Seam with mattress stitch in the project yarn. For washing, follow the ball band: superwash wool and acrylic go in the machine on a wool cycle, untreated wool wants a hand wash in cool water and drying flat. Aran garments are heavy when wet, so support the weight when lifting them out or the shoulders will stretch.
