This pattern isn't perfect, but with a few corrections I got the cutest armadillo! The instructions for the ears need fixing (see my recommendations below).
I did not use the yarns recommended, so it is probably not surprising that I had trouble with the gauge. I used US 3 needles for the main body of the armadillo, but that was uncomfortably tight to knit. With the Lion Brand Homespun yarn I used, the back of the armadillo was too long, so I had to reduce the number of repetitions of rows 1 to 16 to 3 more times instead of 4. If I were to make the project again, I think I would go up to a US 4 or 5 needle for the main body and see how that goes.
Corrections for the ears: Replace rows 1 - 3 as follows:
Cast on 8 stitches with the soy yarn, divide between 2 dpn.
1 - Knit all (8)
2- kfb, k3 on each needle (10)
3 - kfb, k4 on each needle (12)
After row 13, break and thread yarn through remaining stitches. Gather.
