Harakeke begins at one tip with just 3 stitches and expands along one edge to form a triangle. A relatively easy knit, the motifs are formed from a simple repeating stitch pattern that emerges from the top edge. I have used a simple twig pattern, which transforms into a leaf pattern, but I think the resulting fabric looks very much like the tall flower stalks of our native harakeke, or New Zealand flax.

A note on size: If you have less yarn than stated, substitute yarn, or are working at a looser gauge, you may have insufficient yarn to make the shawl quite this big. In the directions I have included instructions for making a slightly smaller version by determining how much yarn you have remaining, and if necessary omitting some row repetitions, and working an alternative edge chart.
