Tools that make a real difference

Add a quarter-inch foot for quilting seams, a zipper foot for pouches, and plenty of clips for bag layers that are too thick for pins. Fusible interfacing, a good iron and a pressing habit matter more than most people expect: pressing each seam as you go is the single biggest difference between a homemade look and a crisp one.

Printing the PDF correctly

Print at 100 per cent or actual size, never fit to page, and check the test square on the first sheet with a ruler before you cut anything. Tape the pages with the trim lines aligned rather than overlapping loosely. Store the assembled paper pattern folded in a labelled envelope with the printout of the instructions and any leftover fabric notes, so a second version is much quicker to make.
