I have used a cotton yarn suitable for a 6-7mm (US J/10-K/101/2) crochet hook but I have worked it using two strands and a 8mm (US L/11) hook. You may decide to use a different weight yarn, you just need to ensure that the crochet fabric turns out to be rigid so that the basket is not floppy and retains its shape.
