The hat was inspired by sudden fall of temperatures in February. I realized it is the coldest month of the year and it could be a good idea to get equipped with one more hat. Especially when, after a mild January, it started snowing heavilly.
The hat combines brioche knitting and cabling. It is a panel hat alternating the brioche pattern and garter stitch and they both give it a thick structure and make it warm and cosy. It can be worked in two style options, beanie or slouch.
Size: One size fits an average adult head.
Level: Adventurous beginner with Internet access and motivation to learn new things or intermediate familiar with brioche. The video tutorials on brioche stitch are included in the pattern. The hat is knit in the round. The pattern uses long-tail tubular cast on, brioche stitch and cabling.
Gauge: 20 sts and 27 rows in stockinette with US 2 ½ / 3mm needles = 10cm (4in). I knit rather loosely so you may need to go up a needle size (or two) to get the gauge. Remember that brioche knits up very fluffy and normally uses 2 or 3 sizes smaller needle than equivalent in stockinette!
Yarn suggested: 55 (65) grams of any worsted weight yarn that meets the gauge, wool if you want the hat very warm.
