Product Description
I came across this lovely natural wool farm yarn and it begged to be knitted into soft, long socks for my toddler. I put a lot of care into designing a sculpted sock that would fit a toddler leg perfectly, and I am very happy with the results. My toddler is, of course, at the age where he pulls off his socks. He hugs them as soon as he gets them off, though, so that says something.
Enjoy!
Winslow Toddler Knee Socks
What Is Being Made
The Winslow Toddler Knee Socks are a pair of fitted knee-length socks designed specifically for toddlers. This downloadable knitting pattern by Jessie Driscoll from Stash Enhancement produces two matching socks using a straightforward construction method worked in the round from the cuff down.
Craft and Knitting Techniques
This project uses circular knitting in the round, a fundamental technique for sock construction that eliminates the need for seaming. The socks are worked on double-pointed needles (dpns), which allow for seamless, tubular fabric creation. The pattern incorporates strategic decreasing to shape the leg and achieve a proper fit for a toddler's smaller proportions. Knitters will practice the long-tail cast-on method, which the designer specifically recommends for creating a crisp, finished edge on the cuff.
Stitches Used
The primary stitches featured in this pattern include:
- Knit stitch (K) – the foundation stitch used for the majority of the leg
- Purl stitch (P) – used in combination with knit stitches
- Ribbing (K1, P1) – creates the elastic cuff that holds the socks securely on a toddler's leg
- Slip, slip, knit (ssk) – a left-leaning decrease used for shaping
- Knit two together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease for symmetrical shaping
Materials and Gauge
The pattern requires 110 yards of sport to DK weight yarn. The designer used merino 2-ply yarn from Greenwood Hill Farm, which is woolen-spun for an airy texture that knits up with slightly tighter gauge than typical sport weight. Knitters will need a set of 4 size 5 (3.75mm) double-pointed needles, or the size needed to achieve the specified gauge. Additional tools include a sewing needle, scissors, and tape measure for finishing and measurement.
The required gauge is 11 stitches over 2 inches in stockinette stitch, worked in the round. Achieving proper gauge is essential for ensuring the finished socks fit a toddler correctly. The pattern begins with a loose cast-on of 36 stitches, divided across three needles (11, 14, and 11 stitches respectively) and joined in the round. The construction starts with a 1-inch K1, P1 ribbed cuff, followed by 1 inch of stockinette stitch before strategic decreases shape the leg.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as advanced, reflecting the multiple techniques required including circular knitting on dpns, proper gauge management, decreasing methods, and the precision needed to create well-fitting toddler-sized garments. While individual stitches are fundamental, the overall construction demands experience with in-the-round techniques and shaping.
