Wiggly Jack-O-Lantern Hot Pad and Coaster
Project Overview
This crochet pattern by Susan Lowman creates a festive pair of Halloween-themed table accessories: a hot pad measuring approximately 6 5/8" wide by 6 1/4" high, and a coordinating coaster measuring approximately 4" wide by 3 3/4" high. Both pieces feature a playful jack-o-lantern design with characteristic pumpkin details, making them ideal for seasonal table settings and kitchen use.
Craft and Technique
This is an intermediate-level crochet project that combines colorwork techniques with mesh stitch construction. The design utilizes multiple yarn colors to create the jack-o-lantern face and pumpkin body, requiring color changes and careful stitch placement to achieve the distinctive wiggly character design. The use of fine cotton crochet thread and small steel hooks allows for precise, detailed work suitable for functional kitchen items.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern calls for Size 10 cotton crochet thread in five colors:
- Off-White (A): 155 yards total (110 yards for hot pad, 45 yards for coaster)
- Black (B): 75 yards total (45 yards for hot pad, 30 yards for coaster)
- Yellow (C): 65 yards total (55 yards for hot pad, 10 yards for coaster)
- Orange (D): 100 yards total (65 yards for hot pad, 35 yards for coaster)
- Green (E): 8 yards total (5 yards for hot pad, 3 yards for coaster)
The original photographed model was created using J&P Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen and J&P Coats South Maid thread in coordinating colors, though any brand of size 10 cotton crochet thread is suitable for this project.
Tools and Gauge
The pattern requires Size 7 (1.65mm) and Size 10 (1.3mm) steel crochet hooks, or sizes as needed to achieve proper gauge. The specified gauge is 11 mesh and 12 mesh rows equaling a 3" square, which is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions of both the hot pad and coaster.
Stitch Techniques
While the abbreviations section begins with standard crochet terminology including slip stitch (sl st) and beginning (beg), the pattern employs mesh stitch as its primary construction method. This technique creates an open, lacy fabric that is both decorative and functional for hot pads and coasters, allowing heat distribution while maintaining structural integrity.
Design Features
The wiggly quality of the jack-o-lantern design suggests curved, playful lines rather than rigid geometric shapes, giving these pieces a whimsical character. The multi-color construction requires careful attention to color placement to create the recognizable pumpkin face with its characteristic features, making this an engaging project for intermediate crocheters seeking to develop colorwork skills.
