Product Description
This is not your grandmother's afghan stitch! This is Tunisian crochet for all seasons. Although it somewhat resembles Tunisian Simple Stitch, and is just as easy to do, this stitch creates a fabric that is thin, drapes well, and does not curl. Full instructions, with photographs, are provided in the pattern.
Worked in fingering weight wool with a size J/10/6mm afghan hook, this neck-warmer weighs less than two ounces. It's light enough for Summer evenings but will keep the chill of Winter away, as well. This pattern also works with heavier yarn and a larger hook to create a more substantial fabric. Either way, the keyhole will keep the scarf neatly in place.
American terminology is used throughout.
Tunisian Bump Stitch Keyhole Scarf by Joyce Lewis
What Is Being Made
This project is a short scarf designed to be worn snugly around the neck, featuring an integrated keyhole opening. The scarf is worked lengthwise in Tunisian crochet, creating a finished accessory that combines functionality with an elegant drape. The keyhole design allows the scarf to be secured in place while maintaining comfort and style.
Craft and Primary Technique
This is a crochet project that utilizes the Tunisian crochet method, a hybrid technique that combines elements of both crochet and knitting. Tunisian crochet is worked with a crochet hook and creates a distinctive woven appearance on the right side of the fabric. Unlike traditional crochet, Tunisian stitches are worked across multiple loops in forward and return passes, building fabric in a unique way that produces a fabric with visual and textural depth.
Stitches Used
Tunisian Bump Stitch (TBS) is the primary stitch featured in this design. This stitch is worked through the top horizontal loop, specifically targeting the "bump" created in the chain during the return pass of Tunisian crochet. The Tunisian Bump Stitch produces a light and open fabric with a distinctive waffled texture, unlike many other Tunisian stitches that tend to be thick or dense.
Key characteristics of the Tunisian Bump Stitch include:
- Creates fabric that is no thicker than standard crochet despite using Tunisian technique
- Produces a classic woven appearance on the right side of the fabric
- Generates a light, open construction that does not curl
- Features excellent drape and stretch properties
- Develops a distinctive waffled texture throughout the fabric
Working into the bump of the foundation chain in this stitch leaves two loops free on the edge of the fabric, which creates a well-defined and finished appearance while giving the edge additional stretch and flexibility.
Materials
The sample shown in this pattern was worked using Berlini Palais fingering weight yarn, which is a fine yarn weight suitable for creating delicate, draping fabrics. Fingering weight yarn is ideal for projects requiring intricate stitch definition and beautiful drape, making it an excellent choice for a scarf that showcases the waffled texture of the Tunisian Bump Stitch.
A crochet hook appropriate for fingering weight yarn is required to complete this project. The specific hook size would typically be determined by the yarn manufacturer's recommendations and the desired fabric density.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as a beginner-friendly project, making it accessible to crocheters who are new to Tunisian techniques or looking to expand their stitch repertoire. Despite introducing the Tunisian Bump Stitch, the straightforward lengthwise construction and simple keyhole integration make this an approachable introduction to Tunisian crochet methods.
