Product Description
Ten page written pattern with photographs so help you create your very own armoured vegetarian beast with feisty plates and spines! RAAAAAR!
You'll need to be able to knit back and forth, in the round, increase, decrease, pick up stitches and do a three needle bind off.
I've used worsted (aran) weight yarn and US5 (3.75mm) needles for the one pictured and it is about 12" (30cm) long but you could easily use a different weight if you wanted a smaller or larger dino.
You will be able to download the pattern as soon as you have paid but if you have any problems doing so please let me know as I can easily email it to you.

Stegosaurus Knitting Pattern by Jillian Thom
What is Being Made
This downloadable knitting pattern creates a knitted toy stegosaurus dinosaur, inspired by the prehistoric herbivore that roamed Europe and North America during the late Jurassic period. The finished toy features the stegosaurus's distinctive characteristics: a rounded back, paired plates along the spine, and tail spikes. This intermediate-level project is designed as a stuffed toy suitable for children and dinosaur enthusiasts.
Construction Techniques
The stegosaurus is constructed using a strategic multi-part knitting approach that builds the toy efficiently and allows for creative embellishment. The pattern begins by knitting the main body in one piece using the in-the-round technique, which creates a seamless, tubular form ideal for a stuffed toy. Once the body is complete, stitches are picked up on either side to create the four legs, a common technique for adding appendages to knitted toys without excessive seaming. The most distinctive construction element involves creating and attaching the stegosaurus's signature plates and spines, which are added after the basic body structure is finished, allowing the maker to customize the appearance and positioning of these iconic features.
Stitches and Techniques Used
While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the pattern excerpt provided, the construction relies on fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for an intermediate-level crafter. The in-the-round knitting method forms the foundation of the project, requiring familiarity with circular needles or double-pointed needles and techniques for maintaining even tension in tubular knitting. The pick-up and knit technique is essential for creating the legs from the body's existing stitches, a skill that intermediate knitters should possess. The creation and attachment of the decorative plates and spines likely involves additional shaping techniques to achieve the dimensional, three-dimensional appearance characteristic of stegosaurus anatomy.
Materials
This pattern is designed to work with worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides good stitch definition and is forgiving for intermediate knitters. Appropriate needles for worsted weight yarn—whether circular needles for in-the-round work or double-pointed needles—are required. The toy will need fiberfill stuffing to create a soft, huggable finished product suitable for play.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes knitters have mastered basic stitches and are comfortable with in-the-round construction and stitch pick-up techniques. The multi-part construction and creative embellishment of the plates and spines provide engaging challenges without requiring advanced techniques.
