Product Description

This hat is part of The Rosebuds & Lace Suite, which consists of matching Cowl, Hat, and Fingerless Mitts.

The hat uses a variation of the Old Shale lace pattern which forms the brim when turned up, and then has cabled rosebuds on the body.

It's a relatively quick and easy knit that takes about 110 to 140 yards of a light worsted weight yarn, using US size 7 (4.5 mm) and 8 (5.0 mm) circular needles (or DPNs).

The hat is constructed in the round from the bottom up, and there are instruction and a pictorial guide for turning the work inside out so the lace shows when the brim is turned up.

This pattern has a chart and completely written out instructions for adult sizes Small, Medium, and Large.

What is Being Made

The Rosebuds & Lace Hat is a knitted accessory designed as a companion piece to the Rosebuds & Lace Cowl and Mitts collection. This hat is available in three adult sizes: Small, Medium, and Large. It functions as an excellent stash-busting project, requiring less than one skein of yarn (approximately 110–140 yards), making it ideal for using leftover yarn from larger projects such as Aran sweaters.

Techniques and Construction

The hat features two distinct design elements that showcase intermediate-level knitting skills. The brim is constructed using Old Shale lace, a classic lace technique that creates a naturally wavy edge when finished. The body of the hat incorporates simple cabled rosebuds as decorative motifs, adding visual interest and texture to the crown. The combination of lace and cable work makes this pattern suitable for knitters with some experience in both techniques.

Stitches Used

  • Old Shale lace stitch for the brim
  • Cable stitches for the rosebud motifs on the hat body
  • Standard knit and purl stitches as foundational elements

Materials and Yarn Weight

This pattern calls for light worsted weight yarn, offering flexibility in fiber choice while maintaining consistent drape and structure. The modest yardage requirement (110–140 yards) makes this an economical project perfect for using leftover yarn from previous knitting endeavors. The worsted weight ensures the finished hat will have appropriate warmth and durability for regular wear.
