Quail Studio Ida PDF Knitting Pattern Summary

The Quail Studio Ida is a classic, relaxed-fit pullover sweater designed for knitters who enjoy straightforward, satisfying construction in a luxuriously chunky yarn. This downloadable PDF pattern produces a cosy, everyday jumper with clean lines, set-in sleeves, and a neat neckband — a timeless wardrobe staple that works beautifully in the specified yarn. The pattern is offered in six sizes to fit bust measurements from 71–76 cm (28–30 in) up to 122–127 cm (48–50 in), with generous actual finished measurements ranging from 113 cm to 138 cm in width, giving a comfortable, oversized ease across all sizes.

What Is Being Made

The Ida pattern creates a seamed, drop-shoulder-style pullover sweater with set-in armhole shaping. The garment consists of four separate pieces — a back, a front (both worked identically), and two sleeves — which are then joined together during making up. The identical back and front panels simplify the knitting process, making this an excellent project for those building confidence with garment construction. The finished sweater features shaped armholes, tapered sleeves with sleeve cap shaping, and a neckband worked as an integral part of the shoulder and neck shaping.

Construction Techniques

  • Bottom-up construction: Each piece is cast on at the lower edge and worked upward toward the shoulders, following a traditional and intuitive garment-building sequence.
  • Worked flat: All four pieces — back, front, and both sleeves — are knitted flat on straight needles, row by row, rather than in the round. This means knitters work right-side (RS) and wrong-side (WS) rows alternately throughout.
  • Seamed finishing: Once all pieces are complete, the garment is assembled using mattress stitch to join shoulder seams and neckband seams, creating a neat, professional, and virtually invisible join. Side seams and sleeve seams are also sewn together, and the sleeves are set in by hand.
  • Armhole shaping: Armholes are shaped by casting off stitches at the beginning of rows and then working paired decreases on right-side rows to create a smooth, fitted armhole curve.
  • Sleeve cap shaping: The sleeve caps are shaped using the same cast-off and decrease technique, mirroring the armhole shaping for a clean set-in fit.
  • Sleeve increases: The sleeves are tapered from the cuff upward using Make 1 (M1) increases worked at each end of right-side rows at regular intervals, creating a gradual widening toward the underarm.
  • Pressing and blocking: The pattern instructs knitters to press all pieces before seaming, following the yarn's care instructions, which is particularly important with a brushed or fluffy yarn to set the fabric and ease assembly.

Stitches Used

  • Stocking stitch (st st): The entire garment — body and sleeves alike — is worked in stocking stitch, knitting on right-side rows and purling on wrong-side rows. This creates a smooth, classic fabric that showcases the texture and halo of the chunky yarn beautifully.
  • Slip 1, K1, pass slipped stitch over (Sl 1, K1, psso): A left-leaning decrease used consistently on right-side rows to shape armholes, sleeve caps, and neckband edges. This decrease is worked two stitches in from the left edge of the fabric.
  • K2tog (knit two together): A right-leaning decrease paired with the Sl 1, K1, psso to create fully fashioned, symmetrical shaping. Worked two stitches in from the right edge of the fabric on right-side rows.
  • Make 1 (M1): An increase stitch used during sleeve construction to add stitches at each end of the needle, building the sleeve width gradually from cuff to underarm.
  • Cast on and cast off: Standard cast-on at the beginning of each piece and cast-off used at armhole, sleeve cap, and shoulder shaping points.
