Sock weight sweaters are extremely versatile. They can be worn alone in warmer weather or layered in the colder months. I wanted to create a simple yet elegant look for a children's garment. The colors of the Malabrigo sock make the cabled front of this sweater pop. The wash-ability yarn keeps it a functional sweater for the little ones. The base sweater is a tunic style girls sweater. Mods are included to make this a non-tunic or "boy" version.

I had a hard time coming up with a name that fit this wonderful knit. Someone suggested that I let my 17 month-old name it. So, I did.

Please check your gauge and if needed change needle to obtain gauge.

Little Momo Children's Sweater by Terri Kruse

What is Being Made

Little Momo is a versatile children's sweater designed by independent knitter Terri Kruse, available in sizes ranging from 6 months to 4T. The garment features a simple yet elegant construction with a distinctive cabled front panel that serves as the focal point of the design. This sweater is engineered for year-round wear, functioning as a standalone piece in warmer weather or as a layering piece during colder months. The design offers both girl and boy length options, with girl versions measuring between 12.5 and 17.25 inches in length, while boy versions range from 11 to 16 inches. Chest measurements span from 20 to 26 inches across the size range.

Yarn and Materials

Little Momo is knitted using Malabrigo Sock yarn, a premium 100% Superwash Merino Wool that provides both softness and practical washability—an essential feature for children's garments. Each skein contains 100 grams and yields 440 yards of yarn. The pattern requires 1 to 2 skeins depending on the finished size, with smaller sizes (6 months, 12 months, and 18 months) needing just 1 skein, while larger sizes (2T and 4T) require 2 skeins. The designer used Impressionist Sky for the girl version and Ochre for the boy version, though the superwash properties make the yarn suitable for any color preference.

Needles and Tools

This pattern requires US #3/3.25mm needles in multiple configurations. Smaller sizes (6 months through 18 months) use a single 16-inch circular needle, while larger sizes (2T and 4T) require a 24-inch circular needle to accommodate the increased stitch count. The pattern also calls for one set of US #3/3.25mm double-point needles for working smaller circumferences or for knitters who prefer this method. Needle choice can be adjusted based on individual gauge preferences.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

Little Momo employs advanced-level knitting techniques suitable for experienced knitters. The signature design element is the cabled front panel, which creates visual interest and texture contrast against the simpler body sections. Cable knitting requires crossing groups of stitches over one another to create twisted, rope-like patterns that add dimension to the finished garment. The pattern utilizes sock-weight yarn, which is a fine-gauge yarn requiring precision and attention to detail during construction.

The sweater is constructed using circular knitting methods, as evidenced by the circular needle requirements. This approach allows for seamless construction and continuous rounds, reducing finishing work and creating a more polished final product. The use of double-point needles suggests that smaller circumferences—likely at the neckline, cuffs, or ribbed sections—are worked using this traditional method.

Design Philosophy and Versatility

The designer created Little Momo with the intention of producing a simple yet elegant children's garment that balances aesthetic appeal with practical functionality. The cabled front panel serves as the visual focal point, with the vibrant Malabrigo Sock colors—such as Impressionist Sky and Ochre—making the cable work stand out prominently. The superwash merino wool construction ensures that the sweater withstands frequent washing, a critical consideration for children's clothing. The garment's versatility as both a standalone piece and a layering option extends its wearability across seasons and occasions.

Pattern Format

Little Momo is provided as a downloadable PDF pattern, making it immediately accessible to knitters worldwide. The pattern includes detailed finished measurements for six different size options, enabling knitters to select the appropriate size for their intended recipient.
