Lily - Lacy Rib Bib and Washcloth

What is Being Made

The Lily pattern by Jennifer Lee creates a coordinating set of two items: a bib and a washcloth. Both pieces feature an elegant lacy rib stitch construction and are designed to work together as a matching pair. The bib includes a strap closure with button fastenings, making it practical for everyday use. The washcloth is a square format suitable for kitchen or bathroom use. This is an ideal project for crafters seeking to create functional, decorative textiles with a delicate aesthetic.

Finished Dimensions

  • Bib: 17cm (6¾ inches) wide by 18cm (7 inches) in length, excluding the strap
  • Washcloth: 22cm (8¾ inches) square

Techniques and Stitches Used

The pattern employs a lacy rib stitch as the primary stitch pattern throughout both pieces. This stitch combines knit and purl stitches with yarn forward increases to create an open, textured fabric with vertical ribbed lines and decorative eyelet details. The pattern is deceptively simple to execute, requiring only two rows to complete the repeat, making it accessible despite its sophisticated appearance. The lacy rib technique creates visual interest while maintaining structural integrity in the finished pieces.

Construction begins with casting on stitches and working in the established lacy rib pattern. The bib includes shaping for the strap attachment and incorporates button bands for closure. The washcloth is worked as a flat square using the same stitch pattern throughout.

Yarn and Materials

This pattern is designed for 8ply (DK weight) yarn. The pattern specifically calls for Lincraft Cotton 8ply, with 2 balls of 50g (100m per ball) required to complete both the bib and washcloth. Cotton yarn is an excellent choice for dishcloths and bibs as it provides absorbency and durability for repeated washing and use. Knitters should note that yarn quantities may vary depending on individual tension and specific yarn characteristics.

The pattern requires 4.00mm knitting needles (UK size 8, US size 6) for working the pieces. A wool needle is needed for sewing in ends upon completion. The bib requires 2 buttons for the strap closure.

Tension and Gauge

Achieving the correct tension is important for proper sizing. The pattern specifies 26.5 stitches and 26 rows to 10cm (4 inches) measured over the lacy rib pattern using 4.00mm needles. This relatively tight gauge creates a dense, structured fabric suitable for functional items that will withstand regular use and washing.

Difficulty Level

Although the pattern is rated as Easy, it is classified as an Intermediate project overall. This reflects that while the two-row repeat is straightforward to work, knitters should have foundational skills in reading patterns, managing tension, and executing basic increases such as yarn forward stitches. The lacy rib stitch requires attention to detail to maintain pattern consistency across rows.

Pattern Summary

Lily is a charming, practical pattern that produces a coordinated textile set perfect for gifting or personal use. The combination of cotton yarn with the lacy rib stitch creates pieces that are both visually appealing and highly functional. The straightforward two-row repeat makes this an excellent project for intermediate knitters looking to expand their stitch repertoire while creating items with immediate practical application. The pattern demonstrates how simple stitch techniques can produce sophisticated results when executed with attention to tension and consistency.
