Product Description

This quick hat is designed to be standard fare for sports fans of all stripes and uniforms.

Worked entirely in the round from the bottom up, a bit of stranded color work in your favorite team’s colors shows off your allegiance and keeps the knitting interesting. An optional pom pom in the contrasting color adds to the fun.

Note on Sizing: Due to the nature of stranded colorwork, this hat is not particularly stretchy. Choose a size that won’t require the colorwork to stretch much around the wearer’s head. For a bit more flexibility in sizing, you may wish to work either size in a slightly thicker yarn at a slightly wider gauge. As the pattern is written, size small will work well for older children and adults/teens with smallish heads, while size medium will fit most adult noggins.

Notes on Construction: The hat is constructed by casting on for the k2p2 ribbing and working in the round prior to the colorwork section. Some knitters may find it more comfort

What Is Being Made

The Fan Fare Hat is a quick-to-knit sports fan hat designed to showcase team colors and allegiance through stranded colorwork. This intermediate-level knitting project is worked entirely in the round from the bottom up, making it an accessible yet engaging design for knitters looking to incorporate color work into a wearable accessory. An optional pom pom in a contrasting color adds a playful finishing touch to the completed hat.

Knitting Techniques Used

This hat employs several intermediate knitting techniques that make it suitable for knitters with some experience. The primary construction method is circular knitting, worked entirely in the round to create a seamless garment. The design features stranded colorwork, a technique where two colors of yarn are carried across the inside of the fabric to create color patterns on the exterior. This method keeps the knitting interesting and visually engaging while maintaining the structural integrity of the hat.

Additional shaping techniques include strategic increases and decreases to form the crown of the hat. The pattern uses both standard decreases and specialty decreases such as slip, slip, knit (ssk) and slip 2, knit 1, pass 2 slipped stitches over (sl2-k1-p2sso) to create clean, directional decreases at the crown. The hat may also incorporate wrap and turn (w&t) techniques for specific shaping elements, as referenced in the pattern's stitch glossary.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch (stst): The foundation stitch for this hat, created by knitting all rounds to produce a smooth, flat fabric ideal for displaying colorwork
  • Knit (k): The primary stitch throughout the hat
  • Purl (p): Used selectively in the pattern
  • Knit through front and back (kfb): An increase method that creates new stitches
  • Knit two together (k2tog): A right-leaning decrease used for crown shaping
  • Slip, slip, knit (ssk): A left-leaning decrease that pairs with k2tog for balanced crown decreases
  • Slip 2, knit 1, pass 2 slipped stitches over (sl2-k1-p2sso): A double decrease used for more pronounced shaping
  • Make 1 right (m1R): An invisible increase worked on right-side rows
  • Knit into the back loop (kbl): A variation that creates twisted stitches for textural interest

Materials and Tools

The Fan Fare Hat is worked using yarn in at least two contrasting colors to showcase team allegiance through stranded colorwork. Knitters will need circular knitting needles or double-pointed needles (DPNs) appropriate to the yarn weight specified in the pattern, as the entire hat is constructed in the round. The pattern includes comprehensive abbreviations and a detailed stitch glossary to support knitters through techniques such as increases, decreases, and specialty stitches. An optional pom pom in a contrasting color serves as a decorative finishing element.

Pattern Format

This is a downloadable PDF pattern designed by independent designer Mary Annarella. The pattern is classified as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to explore colorwork and more complex shaping methods.
