Product Description
This pattern is for a lace knit lap blanket. The lace pattern creates beautiful dragon scales and the blanket is surrounded by a garter stitch border. The blanket pattern is easily adjustable for custom sizing.
I left this blanket unblocked to give the scales a closer together look so there is a significant amount of stretch to the blanket. Measurements were taken with the blanket laid down unstretched.
The pattern includes both a chart and written directions for the dragon scale lace.
The blanket is designed with 100% cotton because it was originally made for my niece who has severe allergies to other yarn fibers. The yarn can easily be substituted out of another worsted weight yarn of your choice.
Dragon Scale Blanket by Laura Ann
Project Overview
The Dragon Scale Blanket is an advanced-level knit lap blanket featuring an elegant lace pattern that mimics the appearance of dragon scales. This downloadable knitting pattern combines intricate lacework with a classic garter stitch border, creating a sophisticated textile suitable for both decorative display and functional warmth. The design is fully customizable, allowing knitters to adjust dimensions to suit their specific needs.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a rectangular lap blanket measuring 56 inches wide by 40 inches long in its standard configuration. The blanket showcases a striking dragon scale lace motif as the central design element, surrounded by a garter stitch border that frames and stabilizes the piece. The finished blanket combines delicate openwork with a sturdy, textured perimeter.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Lace Knitting: The dragon scale pattern is created through strategic yarn overs and decreases that form the characteristic openwork design
- Garter Stitch: A foundational knit stitch technique used for the border, created by knitting every row to produce a textured, reversible fabric
- Gauge Adjustment: The pattern provides specific gauge measurements to ensure proper sizing and drape
- Pattern Repeats: The design uses repeating pattern sequences that can be extended or reduced to customize blanket length
- Marker Placement: Stitch markers are used to track pattern repeats and maintain consistency throughout the project
Stitches Used
- Knit (K): The fundamental stitch forming the base of the garter stitch border and structural elements
- Purl (P): Used in combination with knit stitches to create textural variation
- Yarn Over (YO): Creates the openwork holes characteristic of the dragon scale lace pattern
- Knit 2 Together (K2tog): A right-leaning decrease used to balance yarn overs and shape the lace motif
- Slip, Knit, Pass Slipped Stitch Over (SKP): A left-leaning decrease that provides directional shaping within the dragon scale pattern
- Slip, Knit 2 Together, Pass Slipped Stitch Over (SK2P): A double decrease creating more pronounced shaping in the lace design
- Slip Marker (SM): A technique for moving stitch markers to track pattern sections
Materials and Specifications
Yarn: The pattern calls for Knit Picks Dishie Cone in the colorway Jalapeno. This is a 100% cotton yarn available in 760-yard/400-gram cones, with 2 cones required to complete the blanket. Worsted weight yarn provides excellent stitch definition for displaying the intricate dragon scale lace pattern.
Needles: Size 8 (5mm) needles are used to work the blanket at the specified gauge of approximately 15 stitches by 28 rows per 4 inches in the dragon scale lace pattern when unblocked.
Customization Options
The Dragon Scale Blanket pattern is designed with flexibility for custom sizing. Width adjustments are made by increasing or decreasing the cast-on stitches in increments of 22 stitches, allowing knitters to create wider or narrower blankets as desired. Length adjustments are accomplished by increasing or decreasing the number of pattern repeats, making it simple to create a shorter throw or an extended lap blanket. This adaptability makes the pattern suitable for various project goals and yarn quantities.
