Dandylion Kitty Cat Crochet Pattern
What Is Being Made
The Dandylion kitty cat is a crocheted amigurumi-style toy cat designed by Sonja van der Wijk. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished cat approximately 9.1 inches (23 centimeters) in length. The project is classified as a beginner-level crochet design, making it accessible to crafters new to amigurumi construction while still offering engaging detail work.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The cat is worked in the round using spiral construction, a common method in amigurumi creation where rounds are worked continuously without joining. The designer recommends using a stitch marker to clearly identify the beginning of each round, moving the marker upward as new rounds commence to maintain pattern clarity and prevent mistakes.
Color changes are an important element of this design. The pattern uses color-coded instructions to simplify complex color transitions. Simple color changes are written after round descriptions, requiring crafters to read the complete line before beginning. All color changes are executed in the final loop of a stitch, ensuring the new color appears on the hook as the round progresses.
Stitches Used
While the complete stitch list is not fully detailed in the provided content, the pattern is written in standard American crochet terminology. The designer recommends reviewing the pattern thoroughly before beginning to familiarize yourself with all stitches employed in the construction.
Materials: Yarn and Tools
The pattern is designed for worsted weight yarn. The designer specifically recommends using fuzzy yarn for optimal results, as this texture enhances the cat's appearance and tactile appeal. The recommended yarn is Istex Lètt lopi, a 100% wool option that produces the intended finished size of approximately 23 centimeters.
It is important to note that finished size depends on both yarn weight and individual crochet tension. Crafters using different yarns or working with varying tension levels may produce cats of different dimensions. The designer recommends experimenting with eye sizing despite provided recommendations, as tension variations affect overall proportions.
Standard crochet tools required include an appropriate crochet hook sized for worsted weight yarn and a stitch marker for tracking round beginnings throughout the project.
