What chunky yarn does that lighter weights cannot

Chunky sits between aran and super chunky, usually knitted on 6mm or 7mm needles at somewhere near 14 stitches over 10cm. The appeal is obvious the first time you use it: a hat takes an evening, a scarf a weekend, a simple jumper a fortnight of ordinary evenings. What is less obvious is that chunky changes the design language too. Cables become bold sculptural ropes, seed and moss stitch read as deep texture rather than fine pattern, and a plain stocking stitch fabric looks deliberate rather than empty.

Fibres and how they behave in this weight

• Wool: warm, springy, blocks beautifully and holds a cable's definition. The best choice for outerwear.
• Acrylic: light for its bulk, machine washable and inexpensive – sensible for blankets and children's knits.
• Wool-acrylic blends: the practical middle, with most of wool's structure and easier care.
• Alpaca and alpaca blends: very warm with heavy drape; a chunky alpaca jumper will grow lengthways, so keep the body short.
• Roving and unspun styles: gorgeous and soft, but they pill and can pull apart under tension. Best for cushions, throws and low-friction accessories.

Needles, hooks and quantities

Most chunky yarns want 6mm to 7mm needles or a 6mm to 7mm hook, but treat that as a starting point rather than a rule – the ball band's tension is the number that matters. Because each stitch covers so much ground, a half-stitch error over 10cm translates into several centimetres across a garment, so swatch even for a hat. On quantities, chunky eats metres: a scarf may take 200 to 400 metres, an adult jumper often 800 to 1,400, a decent throw well over 1,000. Buy the yardage the pattern asks for in one dye lot, and expect fewer metres per 100g than in DK.

Substituting into a chunky pattern

Two chunky yarns can behave very differently. A dense woollen-spun chunky and an airy, lofty one may hit the same tension yet produce fabrics with completely different weight and drape. Compare metres per 100g as well as the stated tension: if your substitute has noticeably fewer metres per ball, the finished garment will be heavier and may sag. Holding two strands of DK together is a workable substitute in a pinch and gives an interesting marled effect, though it uses yarn quickly.

Getting a good fabric

The commonest problem in chunky knitting is a fabric that is too loose, showing gaps and going shapeless within a season. If you can see daylight between stitches, go down a needle size. The second problem is bulk at seams and shoulders, which is why so many chunky designs are drop-shouldered or seamless. Where you must seam, use a single strand split from the yarn if it plies apart easily, so the join does not double the thickness.

Care and storage

Wash by hand in lukewarm water unless the label says otherwise, support the weight when you lift the wet piece – chunky knitting holds a great deal of water and will stretch under its own weight – then roll in a towel and dry flat. Fold rather than hang. De-pill with a fabric comb once a season and a chunky jumper will look new for years.
