Packs, bundles and kits - and which one you want

These three things get shelved together but solve different problems. A colour pack is a set of coordinated mini balls or full balls in one yarn line, bought because choosing eight shades that work together is harder than knitting them. A multi pack is quantity of one shade at a better per-ball price, bought because a blanket needs a single dye lot. A kit is a project in a box: the yarn, the pattern, and often the hook, needles or a tapestry needle, so nothing is missing at nine o'clock on a Sunday.

Why a single dye lot matters

This is the practical argument for buying a pack rather than balls as you go. Yarn is dyed in batches, and two balls of the same shade from different lots can differ enough that the join shows as a faint stripe across a blanket - invisible in the ball, obvious in a finished piece under daylight. Multi packs are usually filled from one lot. If you are working a large single-colour project, buy the whole quantity at once and keep one ball band, because it carries the shade name, the lot number, the tension and the washing symbols you will want later.

What is typically in a kit

• Blanket and throw kits - all the yarn for a full-size make, often in chunky or aran so it grows fast, plus the chart or written pattern.
• Amigurumi and toy kits - yarn, safety eyes, stuffing and a hook, sized so there are no half-used oddments.
• Accessory kits - hat, cowl, mitten or sock sets, generally one or two balls and a pattern card.
• Beginner learn-to-craft kits - a simple project plus the tool, aimed at someone who owns nothing yet.

Buying for a stash rather than a project

Stash buying has one rule worth keeping: buy either enough of something to make a whole garment, or so little that it is honestly scrap yarn for motifs. Check the pack's total metreage against the pattern's stated requirement, then add one ball as insurance for a longer body or deeper sleeves. If a kit lists a hook or needle size, that size assumes the tension the designer used, so a tension square is still worth ten minutes.

Kits as gifts

A kit is the only reliable way to buy for a crafter whose stash you do not know, because it is complete and self-contained rather than a guess at what they already own. For a non-crafter, a beginner kit with the tool included removes the intimidating shopping step entirely. Keep the pattern leaflet with the kit until the project is finished, since replacing a lost pattern card mid-make is a nuisance.

Care and storage

Store packs in the bag or box they arrive in, with the ball band, away from direct sunlight - sunlight fades bright pinks and reds faster than any other shade. Wool and wool blends need airtight storage or cedar to keep moths off; acrylic and cotton do not. Once a project is finished, wash to whichever ball band symbol is strictest across the yarns you used, and keep a spare length of each colour taped to the pattern for future repairs.
