Stitch patterns that behave

The single most common scarf problem is curling, and it comes from stocking stitch. Garter, moss and seed stitch, ribbing and most cabled fabrics all lie flat, which is why they dominate scarf patterns. If you love the look of stocking stitch, work a wide garter or seed stitch border down both edges, or knit a double-sided scarf using two-colour brioche or a tube worked in the round. Reversible patterns matter more on a scarf than on any other garment, because both sides are on show every time it is worn.

Length, width and how much yarn

• A classic adult scarf is around 150cm to 180cm long and 20cm to 25cm wide.
• A snug, tuck-into-a-coat scarf can be shorter, at 120cm to 140cm.
• An infinity loop usually measures 130cm to 150cm around before joining.
• Child sizes are typically 100cm to 120cm; keep them short enough not to trail.
• Expect roughly two to four balls for an adult scarf, or 300 to 500 metres, depending on weight and stitch pattern. Cables and brioche require noticeably more yarn.

Chunky yarn on 6mm to 8mm needles gives a warm scarf fast and is the sensible choice for a first project or a Christmas deadline. DK on 4mm is the everyday middle ground. 4 ply and lace weight take much longer but produce a scarf you can wrap several times and tuck under a collar without bulk. Merino is soft next to the neck, alpaca is warmer and drapes heavily, and a wool and silk blend gives lace its shine. Avoid anything scratchy: a scarf sits against the most sensitive skin you have.

Techniques and how to build on them

A garter stitch scarf is the classic first project because it is nothing but straight rows, which is exactly what you need while your tension settles. From there, ribbing teaches you to move the yarn between needles, moss stitch teaches you to read your knitting, and cables are the natural next step since a scarf lets you repeat one cable panel until it becomes automatic. Lace scarves introduce yarn overs, decreases and charts, plus the discipline of a lifeline. Brioche and stranded colourwork are the most involved options here and are worth attempting once tension is reliable.

Blocking, finishing and fringing

Blocking transforms a scarf. Soak it, roll it in a towel, then pin it out to length and width and let it dry; lace in particular will open into something quite different from the crumpled thing that came off the needles. Add fringe with a crochet hook, cutting the strands twice the finished length plus a little for the knot, and trim after the scarf has hung for a day.
