Button Scarf by Monique Rae Designs
What is Being Made
The Button Scarf is a beginner-friendly knit accessory designed by Monique Rae. This circular scarf measures approximately 20 inches in diameter and stretches to about 42 inches in length when laid flat. The finished piece features two decorative ¾" buttons sewn onto the fabric, adding both visual interest and functional closure options to the design.
Craft and Technique
This project uses knitting as its primary construction method, making it an excellent choice for those new to the craft. The Button Scarf is classified as a beginner-level pattern, requiring only fundamental knitting skills and basic stitch knowledge. The straightforward construction involves casting on a small number of stitches and working in a single stitch pattern throughout the entire project, which keeps the learning curve manageable for novice knitters.
Stitches Used
The Button Scarf relies on garter stitch as its primary stitch pattern. Garter stitch is created by knitting every row, which produces a textured, ribbed appearance with horizontal ridges. This stitch is ideal for beginners because it requires only one basic knitting technique repeated consistently, and the resulting fabric has excellent drape and stability suitable for a wearable scarf.
Materials and Tools
- Yarn: 1 skein of super bulky weight yarn (5 oz / 142g). The pattern specifies Lion Brand Hometown USA yarn as the tested yarn choice.
- Needles: US size 11 (8.0mm) knitting needles
- Additional Materials: 2 buttons measuring ¾ inch in diameter and a needle for sewing buttons onto the finished scarf
Gauge and Finished Dimensions
The pattern establishes a gauge of 11 stitches and 9 rows per 4 inches when working in garter stitch. The finished scarf measures approximately 20 inches in diameter and 42 inches in length, making it a versatile accessory suitable for various styling options.
Pattern Overview
Construction begins with casting on 9 stitches. The knitter then works in garter stitch by knitting every row until the scarf reaches approximately 42 inches in length. Once the desired length is achieved, the stitches are bound off, leaving enough yarn to complete the binding off process securely. After completing the knitted fabric, the two ¾" buttons are sewn onto the finished scarf using a needle and thread.
