Willow the WIP Gnome by Phoenixknits
What is Being Made
Willow the WIP Gnome is a charming knitted doll designed by Phoenixknits as a whimsical "helping hand" gnome. According to the designer's concept, Willow is a magical companion who will finish your unfinished knitting projects while you sleep. This finished gnome stands 11 inches high from boots to hat tip, making it a delightful decorative piece or gift for knitting enthusiasts. The gnome is constructed with a unified body and head piece, creating a cohesive sculptural form.
Craft and Techniques
This is a knitting project classified at intermediate difficulty level. The pattern requires precision in stitch work and understanding of specialized knitting techniques to ensure proper construction and proportions. The designer emphasizes the importance of following the exact stitch methods provided, as using alternative techniques will result in incorrect stitch counts and compromise the final garment structure.
Stitches Used
The pattern employs several key knitting techniques and abbreviations:
- Yfd (yarn forward) – bringing the yarn towards the front of the knitting to create yarn overs and decorative elements
- Yb (yarn back) – positioning the yarn to the back of the work for proper stitch formation
- Slip1 (slip stitch) – slipping stitches onto the needle without working them, either knitwise or purlwise as specified in instructions
- TURN – a short-row technique where you work a stated number of stitches then turn your work, leaving remaining stitches unworked on the other needle, allowing for shaping and dimensional form
Materials
This knitted gnome is created using DK weight yarn in three coordinating colors:
- Flesh tone – less than 20 grams (for face and hands)
- Moss green – less than 40 grams (primary color for clothing and body)
- Cream – less than 20 grams (for accents and details)
The pattern notes that you may substitute colors of your choice while maintaining the same yarn weight and yardage. Standard knitting needles appropriate for DK yarn are required, though specific needle sizes are detailed in the complete pattern instructions.
Pattern Structure
The body and head are constructed as one continuous piece, streamlining the assembly process and creating a seamless form. This integrated approach to construction is a key design feature that contributes to the gnome's cohesive appearance.
