Product Description
This is the forthin my second washcloth series! I have a new one coming out every month. These have been designed to help crocheters expand on their skill set by playing with stitches and stitch designs that may be new to them while creating something that is useful. This series we're playing with borders so that you can discover new ways to add an edge to your own projects.
This design uses chains and single crochet (double crochet in UK terms) to create a decorative border.
All my patterns are in US and UK terms. This pattern also contains pictures of each round of the border.
Washcloth 4 – Series 2 by Seona Roberts
What is Being Made
This is a beginner-friendly crochet washcloth design from the Washcloth 4 Series 2 collection by independent designer Seona Roberts. The finished washcloth measures 32cm x 32cm (approximately 12.5 inches square), making it a practical size for kitchen or bathroom use. This particular pattern focuses on exploring different border techniques that can be adapted across various crochet projects.
Design Focus and Adaptability
The series emphasizes border variations that are intentionally designed to be flexible and forgiving. The borders chosen do not require precise stitch counts, making them ideal for crafters who may have slight variations in their tension or stitch counts. According to the pattern notes, if your foundation row ends up with an even stitch count instead of the recommended uneven number, you can simply skip an extra stitch to reach the corner stitch. Once the foundation is established, stitch count precision becomes less critical, allowing for creative freedom and easier customization.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
This washcloth pattern uses fundamental crochet stitches suitable for beginners:
- Slip Stitch (ss): Used to join rounds and create seamless transitions. This stitch involves inserting the hook into a stitch, yarning over, and pulling the yarn through both the stitch and the loop on the hook.
- Chain Stitch (ch): The foundation stitch used to create the base chain for the washcloth.
- Single Crochet (sc): A basic short stitch that creates a dense, sturdy fabric ideal for washcloths.
- Double Crochet (dc): A taller stitch used in the border work to create visual interest and textural variation.
Materials Required
The pattern calls for 100% cotton yarn in 10ply, worsted, or aran weight. The designer uses Knit Picks Dishie yarn, which is a popular choice for dishcloths and washcloths due to its absorbency and durability. A 5mm crochet hook is recommended to work with this yarn weight. You will also need a needle to weave in the ends once your washcloth is complete.
Pattern Structure
The pattern uses US crochet terminology and includes detailed abbreviations for reference. The foundation row is the critical starting point, with the pattern notes emphasizing the importance of achieving an uneven stitch count at the corners. This thoughtful design choice means that once your foundation is set, you can proceed with the border work without constantly counting stitches, making it an accessible project for beginners while still offering interesting design elements through the border variations.
