Product Description
Designed by myself, this gorgeous cowl is part of a series of cowls I'm doing inspired by New York, my home state. They are designed to be comfortable, fun to knit, and perfect to wear with a stylish wool coat or a denim jacket.
The Roxbury Cowl was named after the affluent waterfront neighborhood in northern Queens. It is home to private parks, marinas, bridges, and some of the most expensive real estate in New York City. This pattern combines my favorite cable designs into a reversible, thick cowl that would be perfect to wearing in Roxbury or any neighborhood.
Suggested yarns: Anything worsted weight.
Needle size: 9 (5.5mm), 16" circular is best

The Roxbury Cowl by Aunt Janet's Designs
Project Overview
The Roxbury Cowl is an intermediate-level knitting project designed by Janet Jameson. This cowl is knit seamlessly in the round using aran-weight yarn, creating a finished piece that is completely reversible. The circular construction method eliminates the need for seaming and allows the stitch patterns to be appreciated from both sides of the garment.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a cowl—a close-fitting neck accessory that combines warmth with sophisticated stitch work. The cowl is cast on with 80 stitches and worked in continuous rounds, making it an ideal project for knitters comfortable with circular needles and in-the-round construction.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Roxbury Cowl employs several key knitting techniques that contribute to its intermediate difficulty level:
- Cable Knitting: The pattern features two distinct cable techniques—Front Cable (FC) and Back Cable (BC)—which create the dimensional texture characteristic of cable-knit designs. These cables are worked by slipping stitches to a cable needle, holding them in front or back of the work, and then knitting in a specific sequence to create twisted, rope-like columns.
- In-the-Round Knitting: The entire cowl is constructed using circular needles, allowing for seamless construction and a reversible finished product.
- Ribbed Edging: The pattern incorporates knit and purl ribbing (K1, P1 alternating) to frame the cable sections and create structure at the edges.
Stitches Used
The Roxbury Cowl uses fundamental knitting stitches arranged in a strategic pattern:
- Knit Stitch (K): The primary stitch used throughout the cowl, forming the base of the fabric.
- Purl Stitch (P): Used in combination with knit stitches to create ribbed sections and textural contrast.
- Front Cable (FC): Slip 3 stitches to cable needle and hold in front of work, knit 3 stitches from left needle, then knit 3 stitches from cable needle.
- Back Cable (BC): Slip 3 stitches to cable needle and hold in back of work, knit 3 stitches from left needle, then knit 3 stitches from cable needle.
Stitch Pattern Structure
The pattern is worked over a 6-round repeat. Rounds 1 through 4 establish the base fabric with alternating knit and purl stitches. Round 5 is designated as the cable round, where Front and Back cables are strategically placed to create visual interest. The cable placement creates symmetrical columns of twisted stitches that enhance the cowl's three-dimensional appearance. Round 6 returns to the established knit and purl pattern, allowing the cables to develop their characteristic raised texture.
Materials Required
The Roxbury Cowl requires minimal materials, making it an accessible project for most knitters:
- Yarn: Aran-weight yarn (also known as worsted weight), totaling 10 ounces. This weight provides excellent stitch definition for cable work and creates a fabric with good drape and warmth.
- Needles: Size 9 (5.5mm) knitting needles in circular format, sized appropriately for in-the-round construction with 80 cast-on stitches.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle cable techniques. The combination of ribbing, stockinette sections, and cable work provides a balanced challenge without overwhelming complexity. The in-the-round construction and cable manipulations require attention to stitch placement and pattern reading, making this an excellent project for building advanced knitting skills.
