Product Description
This is a knitted snowman with tiny birds, that is designed to cover a chocolate orange. Annd, if you like, a chocolate tea cake too!. Once the chocolate is all gone, the teapot can be used as a decorative item.
The teapot measures approx. 15.5cms.
The pattern includes instructions on how to make the snowman with a list of abbreviations. The pattern is written in English & can be printed onto 2 pieces of paper.
Pieces are knitted flat on a pair of straight 3.25mm knitting needles (US 3). There is a tiny bit of i-cord knitting on a pair of double pointed needles. The pattern is worked using stocking stitch. I've used black beads in the pattern, but you can just embroider these parts if you prefer.
The pattern uses DK yarn (double knitting or light worsted weight); less than 25g in each colour.
Tall Snowman Chocolate Orange Cover
What is Being Made
This is a decorative knitted snowman cover designed to fit around a chocolate orange, creating a festive holiday decoration. The finished snowman stands approximately 15.5 centimeters tall and features a three-part body structure (bottom, middle, and head sections) that work together to form the classic snowman silhouette. The project transforms a chocolate orange into a charming seasonal ornament or gift presentation piece, with optional embellishments including small black beads for eyes and a chocolate teacake for added detail.
Techniques Used
This beginner-friendly knitting project employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for those new to the craft. The primary construction method uses stocking stitch, which creates a smooth, classic knit fabric by alternating knit and purl rows. The pattern incorporates decreasing techniques to shape each section of the snowman, progressively reducing stitches to create the tapered, rounded forms characteristic of a snowman's body. Mattress stitch seaming is used to join the knitted pieces together with an invisible seam, providing a professional finish. The pattern also includes basic shaping through knit front and back increases where needed to build structure, and uses the technique of threading yarn through remaining stitches to close off sections securely.
Stitches Used
- Knit (k) – the fundamental stitch forming the primary fabric
- Purl (p) – used in alternation with knit stitches to create stocking stitch
- Knit two together (k2tog) – a decrease stitch used to shape and reduce stitch counts throughout the body and head sections
- Knit front and back (kfb) – an increase stitch for adding stitches where shaping requires expansion
- Mattress stitch – a seaming technique for joining finished pieces with minimal visible seams
Materials and Tools
The snowman cover requires 25 grams of white dk weight wool as the primary material for the body and head. Oddments of blue, pink, green, orange, yellow, black, and brown dk weight wool are used for decorative details and embellishments. The project calls for 3.25mm knitting needles for the main construction and double-pointed needles for working smaller sections or finishing details. Additional materials include polyester stuffing to give the snowman its three-dimensional shape, optional small black beads for eyes, one chocolate orange (the centerpiece the cover is designed to fit), and optionally a chocolate teacake for decoration. The dk and worsted yarn weights specified provide appropriate drape and stitch definition for this small decorative project.
