Sometimes I knit silly things just to make myself smile. This is one of those times!
When the neighborhood children were playing “scavenger hunt” with their parents during the late spring and early summer I started hanging these diamonds and their companion pieces String Art on the branches of various trees and plants in my garden. Even though closed windows I could hear excited voices telling their mums and dads when they spotted the “big one” or the “little one”.
String Art Diamonds by Mary E Rose Designs
Project Overview
String Art Diamonds is an intermediate-level knitting project designed as a decorative piece. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Mary E Rose creates delicate diamond motifs using fine cotton thread, resulting in elegant string art-inspired decorations suitable for display or embellishment purposes.
What Is Being Made
The pattern produces decorative diamond shapes using knitting techniques. These pieces are designed to evoke the aesthetic of traditional string art while utilizing knitting construction methods. The finished diamonds can be stiffened and blocked into dimensional forms for display as standalone decorations.
Materials Required
- Yarn: Perle Iris Size 8 cotton in main color (MC) 5073, paired with Aunt Lydia's Classic 10 cotton in natural for contrast color (CC)
- Needles: US 00 needles, or size as needed to obtain proper gauge
- Additional Supplies: Large eyed tapestry needle for finishing, wires or pixie sticks for blocking structure, small amount of white glue or starch for optional stiffening
Techniques and Stitches Used
This intermediate project employs several fundamental and decorative knitting techniques to create its diamond pattern effects.
- Cast On (CO): Foundation technique to begin the knitted piece
- Knit (k) and Purl (p): Basic stitches forming the fabric structure
- Knit 2 Together (k2tog): Decreasing technique that combines two stitches into one
- Slip, Slip, Knit (ssk): Left-leaning decrease created by slipping two stitches individually as if to knit, then inserting the left needle through both slipped stitches and knitting them together through the back loops
- Slip, Slip, Slip, Knit (sssk): Triple decrease slipping three stitches individually before knitting them together
- Central Double Decrease (cdd): Slip 2 stitches together, knit 1, then pass the slipped stitches over the knit stitch
- Central Double Decrease Purl (cddp): Slip 2 stitches together, purl 1, then pass the slipped stitches over the purled stitch
Gauge and Finishing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 35 stitches and 42 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for the diamonds to reach their intended finished size and shape. The pieces can be blocked using wires or pixie sticks to create dimensional form, with optional stiffening using white glue or starch to maintain shape.
Yarn Weight and Thread Characteristics
This project uses thread-weight cotton, a fine and delicate material that creates intricate, detailed work. The combination of Perle Iris Size 8 and Aunt Lydia's Classic 10 cotton provides both structure and contrast, allowing the diamond motifs to stand out visually while maintaining the refined appearance characteristic of fine thread work.
