Product Description
Spring Fling is a fun, breezy, lace and cable shrug. The pattern is easily memorized and works up quickly looking far harder than it actually is!
The pattern is easily made larger by adding more repeats to the c/o. As written it fits sizes S - L comfortably.
Gauge is relatively unimportant as the piece grows tremendously in blocking, BUT, if you are a tight knitter I would recommend that you go up a needle size... or two.
Also, please be sure you have enough yarn. (You might ask your LYS to set aside an additional skein just in case) Better to err on the side of caution! The test knitters had only 3 - 5 grams left.)
Spring Fling Bolero by Threebagsfulled
What Is Being Made
Spring Fling is an intermediate-level knitted bolero pattern designed by Threebagsfulled (© 2013 Hilary Designs). A bolero is a short, open-front garment that provides layering versatility for spring and transitional seasons. This particular design creates a fitted, elegant piece suitable for pairing over dresses, tank tops, or casual wear.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern calls for 2 skeins of Elsebeth Lavold LinSilk yarn or 440 yards of worsted weight yarn. This yarn choice suggests a lightweight, breathable fabric ideal for spring wear. Additional materials required include a Size 7 circular needle (24 inches), a cable needle for cable work, stitch markers, and waste yarn for the provisional cast-on technique.
Construction and Techniques
The Spring Fling bolero is constructed using several key knitting techniques that define its intermediate difficulty level:
- Provisional Cast-On: The pattern begins with a provisional cast-on method, which allows for live stitches to be picked up later. The initial cast-on is structured with strategic marker placement: 3 stitches, followed by six sections of 11 stitches each (separated by markers), then 5 stitches, and a final 3-stitch section, totaling 77 stitches.
- Cable Work: The C6B (cable six to the back) technique is a central design element. This involves placing 3 stitches on a cable needle, holding it to the back, knitting the next 3 stitches, then knitting the 3 stitches from the cable needle. This creates the twisted, dimensional cable texture characteristic of the bolero.
- Lace Elements: Yarn overs (yo) combined with decreases create lace motifs throughout the pattern, adding visual interest and a delicate quality to the garment.
- Decreases: The pattern employs multiple decrease techniques including ssk (slip, slip, knit), K2tog (knit 2 together), and s2kp (slip 2, knit 1, pass slipped stitches over), which are essential for shaping and creating the lace pattern.
Stitch Pattern Details
The core pattern repeats over 12 rows, worked 20 times to achieve the desired length. Row 1 establishes the lace and cable repeat with yarn overs and decreases creating openwork sections alternating with cable columns. Row 2 features stockinette stitch in the center with garter stitch edges (knit stitches on both sides). Row 3 introduces the cable crossing, creating the three-dimensional texture. This rhythmic pattern creates a balanced, visually appealing fabric with both structure and elegance.
Abbreviations Used
The pattern employs standard knitting abbreviations: c/o (cast on), b/o (bind off), K (knit), P (purl), yo (yarn over), ssk (slip, slip, knit), K2tog (knit 2 together), s2kp (slip 2, knit 1, pass 2 slipped stitches over), wyib (with yarn in back), PM (place marker), and C6B (cable six to the back).
Skill Level Considerations
Classified as an intermediate project, Spring Fling requires familiarity with cable techniques, lace construction, and the ability to manage multiple stitch markers. The combination of cables and yarn-over lace work demands attention to stitch counts and pattern consistency, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to develop more advanced techniques.
