Product Description

There is a freedom in abandoning your cares and lacing up a pair of roller skates and taking to the streets for some fun. The feeling of the breeze on your face and the speed of the scenery passing brings a smile to nearly every face. The Skating in the Street boot cuffs were named to celebrate this luxury, and the cuffs themselves will add a touch of luxury to the top of any boot.

The Skating in the Streets boot cuffs were designed to create a very versatile boot topper. Sized in both standard and plus sizes, the cuffs can be customized to fit your needs. The cabled section is worked flat with a button closure. Picking up stitches for ribbing right along the edge of the cable piece creates a cuff that can be folded over the top of a short boot, or worn long over the top of a cowboy or mid-calf boot. You could even style them over the top of your roller skates for an even more fun look.

Skating in the Streets Boot Cuffs and Legwarmers

What Is Being Made

Skating in the Streets is a reversible knit accessory project designed by Meridith Shepherd for Stacked Woolens. This pattern creates versatile boot cuffs and legwarmers that offer multiple styling options. The finished pieces can be worn folded over the top of ankle boots, extended above the leg of cowboy or mid-calf boots, or styled over roller skates. The reversible construction means you can choose which side faces outward, giving you two distinct looks from a single project.

Finished Dimensions

The boot cuffs are available in two sizes to accommodate different leg sizes. The Average size fits calves up to 15 inches (38 cm) in circumference with a finished circumference of 14 inches (36 cm). The Plus size accommodates calves up to 18 inches (46 cm) with a finished circumference of 17 inches (43 cm).

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate-level knitting project features cable pattern work as the primary stitch technique. The gauge for the cable pattern is 16.5 stitches and 12 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) when worked in the specified stitch pattern. The reversible nature of the design requires careful attention to stitch construction to ensure both sides of the finished cuffs are equally attractive and functional.

Materials and Tools Required

  • Yarn: The Plucky Knitter Bulky weight yarn in 100% Superwash Merino. The colorway used is Two Hearted. You will need 2 skeins for all sizes. Each skein contains 100 grams and provides 135 yards (123 meters) of yardage.
  • Needles: US 11 (8mm) needles for the main knitting, US 10 (6mm) needles for ribbing or finishing, and US 10 (6mm) double-pointed needles (DPNs) for working in the round
  • Additional Notions: Stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, a cable needle for executing cable stitches, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, and six buttons measuring 0.75 inches (2 cm) in diameter

Yarn Weight and Fiber Content

This project uses chunky weight yarn, which works up quickly and creates a substantial, cozy accessory perfect for cooler weather. The Plucky Knitter Bulky is composed of 100% Superwash Merino, a natural fiber that is soft, breathable, and easy to care for. The superwash treatment makes the finished boot cuffs machine-washable, adding to their practicality as everyday accessories.

Design Inspiration

The Skating in the Streets pattern draws inspiration from the freedom and joy of roller skating. The design captures the feeling of taking to the streets for afternoon fun, with the breeze and speed of movement in mind. These boot cuffs and legwarmers are styled to complement the aesthetic of roller skating culture while remaining versatile enough for everyday wear with various boot styles.
