Product Description
SIOBHAN is a great design from Marie's WINTER CROCHET collection for the novice crocheter to try. It’s made just using double crochet, changing colour on every row. There are lots of ends to sew in but I think it’s worth it! Fastened with a pin or a brooch, it is the sort of jacket that can be worn casually or more dressily, especially if worn with a dress.

Siobhan Crochet Cardigan by Marie Wallin
What Is Being Made
Siobhan is a striped crochet cardigan designed by Marie Wallin, featured in the Winter Crochet collection. This garment is a wearable layering piece available in five sizes ranging from small (to fit bust 81-86 cm / 32-34 in) through to extra-extra-large (to fit bust 122-127 cm / 48-50 in). The cardigan is fastened with a decorative pin-brooch, adding a distinctive design detail to the front closure.
Craft and Primary Technique
Siobhan is worked entirely in crochet, making it an ideal project for beginner-level crocheters. The construction uses fundamental crochet techniques that build foundational skills while producing a sophisticated, wearable garment. The pattern maintains consistent stripe sequences throughout the body and sleeves, requiring attention to color changes but straightforward stitch repetition.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The pattern employs essential crochet stitches suitable for beginners. Double crochet (dc) forms the primary fabric structure, creating a dense, stable textile. Chain stitches (ch) are used for foundational chains and turning chains throughout the pattern. Slip stitch (ss) techniques are incorporated for joining and shaping, particularly when decreasing stitches to form armholes. The pattern specifies precise stitch counts and decreasing methods—for example, slip stitching across and into specific stitches to achieve clean armhole shaping without visible gaps.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
Siobhan is designed to be worked in Rowan Felted Tweed, a DK weight yarn (also called light worsted or #3 weight). The pattern calls for six coordinating colorways from the Rowan Felted Tweed range:
- A: Ancient (color 172)
- B: Granite (color 191)
- C: Stone (color 190)
- D: Delft (color 194)
- E: Cinnamon (color 175)
- F: Barn Red (color 196)
Yardage requirements vary by size, with the smallest size requiring 2 x 50gm balls each of colors A, B, C, D, E, and F, increasing to 3 x 50gm balls of each color for the largest size. The pattern specifies a 3.50mm (US E4) crochet hook as the primary tool. Tension is established at 22 stitches and 24 rows to 10 cm (approximately 4 inches) measured over pattern, ensuring proper fit across all sizes. One decorative pin-brooch fastening is required to complete the cardigan.
Design Features
The cardigan incorporates striped colorwork using the six Rowan Felted Tweed shades, creating visual interest and depth. Armhole shaping is achieved through strategic decreasing, with the pattern providing specific stitch counts for each size to ensure proper fit. The decorative pin-brooch closure replaces traditional buttons, offering a unique and elegant finishing touch that complements the striped design.
