What Is Being Made

Sing Winter is a knitted pullover sweater designed by independent designer Alicia Plummer. This garment is available in six finished bust circumference sizes: 32, 36, 40, 44, 48, and 52 inches (81, 92, 102, 113, 122, and 133 centimeters), making it suitable for a range of body measurements. The sweater features a classic construction with a coordinated color scheme combining indigo, wheat heather, and light ash heather tones.

Construction Method and Techniques

Sing Winter is worked in the round from the bottom up, a popular modern knitting approach that minimizes seaming. The construction sequence follows a logical progression: the knitter begins with the body, working upward to the underarm depth, then sets the body stitches aside temporarily. The sleeves are worked next as separate pieces, with live stitches maintained on holders or scrap yarn. Once both sleeves are complete, the knitter joins all live stitches to begin the yoke shaping, which integrates the sleeves and body into a unified upper garment section.

This top-down-inspired hybrid method (bottom-up body with yoke integration) allows for strategic color placement and ensures proper fit through the shoulder and neckline area. The use of stitch markers helps track pattern repeats and shaping points throughout construction.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

Materials: Yarn and Needles

Sing Winter is designed to be knitted with Istex Alafoss Lopi, a 100% wool yarn in chunky weight. Alafoss Lopi is a traditional Icelandic wool known for its warmth, durability, and rustic character. The yarn is worked at approximately 109 yards per 100-gram skein.

Three coordinating colors are used:

• 9959 Indigo (Main Color): 5 to 8 skeins depending on size, totaling 545 to 872 yards
• 9973 Wheat Heather (Contrast Color 1): 1 to 2 skeins, totaling 109 to 218 yards
• 0054 Light Ash Heather (Contrast Color 2): 1 to 2 skeins, totaling 109 to 218 yards

Two needle sizes are required: US 10 (6.0 mm) for the main fabric and US 8 (5.0 mm) for ribbing or other edging details. The pattern specifies using a spare circular needle in the larger size to hold stitches during construction, along with a darning needle for weaving in ends after completion.
