Sheep Dishcloth Knitting Pattern
What Is Being Made
This is a knitted dishcloth featuring a sheep design, created by Ezcareknits. The finished piece measures 7 inches wide by 7¼ inches tall (18 cm by 18.5 cm), making it a practical square washcloth suitable for kitchen use, cleaning, or general household purposes. The design incorporates a charming sheep motif worked into the fabric through strategic purl and knit stitches.
Craft and Techniques
This project uses the knitting craft, making it ideal for beginners learning fundamental knitting techniques. The pattern employs a combination of basic knit and purl stitches to create texture and visual interest, allowing the sheep design to emerge from the contrast between knit (smooth, raised) and purl (bumpy, recessed) stitches. The design is worked flat on straight needles from a cast-on edge through multiple rows to the bind-off, requiring only basic row-by-row construction without complex shaping or color work.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (K): The primary stitch creating smooth, V-shaped columns of fabric
- Purl stitch (P): Used strategically throughout the pattern to create the sheep motif and textured details
- Cast on: Beginning technique to create the initial 37 stitches
- Bind off: Finishing technique worked in knit stitch to secure all stitches
Materials and Tools
This pattern requires 100% cotton yarn in a medium/worsted weight, with a total yardage of 60 yards. Cotton is an excellent choice for dishcloths and washcloths due to its durability, absorbency, and easy-care properties. Knitters will need straight knitting needles in size 7 (4.5mm) or the appropriate size needed to achieve proper gauge. A darning needle is required for finishing and weaving in any yarn ends upon completion.
Pattern Structure
The pattern consists of 56 rows total. The first 7 rows are worked entirely in knit stitch, establishing a garter stitch border. Row 8 and all subsequent wrong-side rows through row 50 follow a consistent pattern of K4, P29, K4, creating a knit frame around the central purl design area. The odd-numbered rows from row 9 onward contain the detailed sheep motif, with varying combinations of knit and purl stitches positioned to create the image. Rows 49 through 56 return to knit stitch across all stitches, finishing with a knit bind-off to complete the piece.
