Materials For this reindeer you’ll need worsted weight yarn and an E US/3.5 mm crochet hook. You’ll need three colours of yarn, murky brown (1/2 of a 100 yard skein), light beige (1/5) and chocolate (1/5). These quantities are estimates. For the eyes I’ve used 8 mm animal eyes. You will also need fibrefill and pellets for a bit of extra weight in the body (I use Hama beads). Inserting pipe cleaners in the antlers is an option. Lopi colour numbers: 0867, 1420 and 0086.
Rupert the Reindeer Crochet Toy Pattern
What Is Being Made
Rupert is a charming amigurumi-style crochet reindeer toy designed by Sonja van der Wijk (Son's Popkes). This finished stuffed toy measures approximately 6.7 inches (17 cm) in sitting height, making it an ideal size for a decorative keepsake, child's toy, or gift. The reindeer features characteristic details that bring personality to this small handmade creation.
Craft and Primary Technique
This pattern is worked entirely in crochet, specifically using the amigurumi technique—a method of creating three-dimensional stuffed toys by crocheting in continuous rounds or spirals. The pattern is written in standard American crochet terms, making it accessible to crocheters familiar with this terminology. Working in the round creates seamless, organic shapes ideal for toy construction.
Stitches and Construction Methods
The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches appropriate for amigurumi construction. The doll is worked in the round using spirals, a continuous technique that eliminates the need for joining rounds. The pattern recommends using a stitch marker to track the beginning of each round, moving it upward as you progress through the pattern. This method creates smooth, evenly-shaped pieces that form the body, head, legs, and other components of the reindeer.
The pattern includes color changes to create visual distinction between different parts of the reindeer. More complex color transitions are highlighted in the pattern using color coding for clarity, while simpler changes are noted after round descriptions. When changing colors, the pattern specifies that you should always change color in the last loop of a stitch, ensuring clean transitions between hues.
Materials: Yarn and Tools
The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn, with the designer specifically recommending fuzzy yarn for optimal results. The recommended yarn is Istex Lètt lopi, a 100% wool option that provides the soft, textured appearance ideal for a cuddly reindeer toy. You will also need an appropriate crochet hook sized to match your worsted weight yarn, along with a stitch marker for tracking rounds and stuffing material for filling the completed toy.
Difficulty Level and Notes for Makers
This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it suitable for crocheters new to amigurumi or toy making. However, the designer emphasizes the importance of reading the entire pattern before beginning to understand the structure and color-change sequences. The finished size of your reindeer will depend on your yarn weight choice and crochet tension, so the designer recommends experimenting with details like eye size despite the provided recommendations. This flexibility allows crafters to customize their Rupert to their preferred proportions.
