Product Description

This hat came to fruition when it came time to knit my brother his yearly birthday hat/beanie. I have been knitting hats for him for many years, but this year, I created a pattern just for him. The beanie was born to be named Quinary. Quinary, meaning fifth, is very fitting as it is my fifth hat pattern I created, and my brother is the fifth child of my family.

Quinary is customizable in size/brims/rolled/fitted/slouchy and of course pompoms. The hat may seem like ‘just a ribbed hat’ but it is full of twists and stitch definition that will capture you from cast on to finish. It is NOT your every day ribbed beanie.

Stitches to know : Knit, Purl, Slip (with yarn in back) SSK (Slip, slip knit), CDD (Center Double Decrease), KTBL (Knit through the back loop) - all directions are given in the key at the end of the pattern.

Quinary Knit Hat by Olive & Pearl Knits

What is Being Made

Quinary is a textured knit beanie designed by Olive & Pearl Knits, created as a custom birthday hat pattern. Named after the Latin word for "fifth," this hat celebrates both the designer's fifth original hat pattern and her brother's position as the fifth child in their family. The pattern offers two adult and teen sizes in the written instructions, making it suitable for a wide range of head sizes and ages.

Pattern Versatility and Customization

This knit hat pattern is highly adaptable, allowing crafters to personalize their finished garment in multiple ways. The base pattern can be easily modified by increasing or decreasing cast-on stitches in multiples of 5, enabling makers to create custom sizes from infant to adult. Beyond sizing, the Quinary hat can be styled as a form-fitting beanie, a slouchy hat, or a longer style with a rolled-up brim. Finishing options include adding a pompom for extra flair, giving knitters complete creative control over their final design.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Quinary pattern features textured knit stitches that move beyond the typical ribbed beanie construction. Rather than relying on standard ribbing alone, this design incorporates varied stitch work to create visual interest and dimension throughout the hat. The texture-focused approach gives the hat a distinctive appearance while remaining accessible to beginner-level knitters.

Yarn and Materials

This pattern is designed to work with Aran or Worsted weight yarn, both medium-weight options that knit up quickly and create a warm, durable fabric ideal for cold-weather hats. The pattern requires standard knitting needles appropriate for the chosen yarn weight, allowing crafters to select their preferred needle material and style.

Skill Level

Quinary is rated as a beginner-friendly knitting pattern, making it an excellent choice for those new to hat construction or knitters looking to expand their texture stitch repertoire without advanced techniques.
