Product Description
Prince Arthur's Hat is an early to mid sixteenth century style cap ideal for use with Henrician costuming and suitable for a wide range of costume impressions as well as being a rather stylish hat for modern wear.
It is knit very large, and fulled to fit, so gauge is flexible, as long as you are getting a comfortable knit for the yarn, your gauge will be fine. Modification Hint: If you prefer a hat with a neater brim profile, work just one increase per section rather than two at this stage, you'll end up with a less flared result that will stand up with less overlap between front and back sections. The hat as written will have a fair overlap between front and back brims which allows for a variety of styling tweaks at blocking stage.
Although the design is based on historic portrait evidence and gives a plausible result for period capping finishes, there are as best I can tell no surviving examples of this hat style so whilst the pattern does discuss the evidence, it is not formal
Prince Arthur's Hat
What is Being Made
Prince Arthur's Hat is a knitted hat inspired by early to mid sixteenth century portrait evidence. This design captures the silhouette and style of headwear worn during the Tudor period, adapted for modern knitters using contemporary knitting techniques while maintaining historical authenticity in appearance.
Design Inspiration and Historical Context
The hat is modeled on portrait evidence from the early to mid sixteenth century, a period when headwear was an important element of aristocratic dress. While the original historical examples may have been constructed using cut and sewn methods, this pattern interprets the design through modern knitting, making it accessible to contemporary crafters. The designer notes that surviving physical examples of this exact hat style have not yet been located, though the shaping is well documented in period portraiture.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level pattern employs modern knitting techniques to achieve the historical silhouette. The construction method allows knitters to create the distinctive Tudor-era hat shape using contemporary approaches to shaping and finishing, making the pattern more approachable for modern knitters while respecting the historical design.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern is worked in aran weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides good stitch definition and drape suitable for hat construction. Standard knitting needles appropriate for aran weight yarn are used to complete this project.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience who are ready to tackle hat shaping and historical pattern interpretation.
