Morning Breeze Cardigan by Christiane Burkhard

Garment Overview

The Morning Breeze is a sophisticated layering cardigan designed by Christiane Burkhard, perfect for wearing over virtually any outfit. This knitted cardigan features a slim, drapey silhouette that cascades elegantly past hip level in the front, making it an ideal transitional piece for any wardrobe. Available in sizes S through XXL with finished bust measurements ranging from 36 inches to 50 inches, this design accommodates a wide range of body types.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

The Morning Breeze employs intermediate-level knitting techniques suitable for experienced crafters looking to expand their skill set. The cardigan is constructed using circular needles for the body, allowing for seamless knitting in the round, which creates a smooth, professional finish. The sleeves are worked separately using either double-pointed needles or small circular needles, a traditional approach that ensures proper shaping and fit. The pattern utilizes stockinette stitch as the primary fabric structure, creating the smooth, refined appearance characteristic of this design.

Stitches and Stitch Work

This cardigan pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches including knit and purl stitches as the foundation of the fabric. Stitch markers play an important role in tracking pattern repeats and construction sections throughout the project. The gauge requirement of 24 stitches and 36 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch is critical for achieving the intended finished measurements and drape of the garment.

Yarn and Materials

The Morning Breeze is designed for lace weight yarn, with the original pattern featuring Creatively Dyed Sydney yarn in the Emerald colorway, a luxurious silk-linen blend. The pattern requires approximately 1400 yards for size S, scaling up to 2800 yards for size XXL. Crafters have flexibility in yarn selection and may substitute fingering weight or sport weight yarns, though these alternatives require additional yardage to achieve the same finished garment dimensions.

Essential needles and tools include US 4 (3.5mm) circular needles measuring 32 inches or longer for the body, US 4 (3.5mm) double-pointed needles or 12-inch circular needles for sleeve construction, and US 3 (3.25mm) needles for the bottom ribbed section. Additional supplies include stitch markers for tracking pattern sections, waste yarn for holding stitches, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends.
